How to Change Your Skincare Routine for Fall

We all know that skincare is an important part of your health and of your daily routine. But what you probably didn’t know was that you should be changing your skincare regime with the seasons. The biggest reason for this is just that as the elements and temperament around you changes, it affects your skin differently. It’s colder and more harsh in the winter times, and all of the pollen in the air in the spring is definitely going to change how your skin reacts. Now that the weather is finally cooler and there are piles of leaves accumulating in all of our neighbors yards, it’s the perfect time to change your skincare routine for fall.

Swap out your cleanser

When you’re sweating a lot more during the summer months, you’re sweating a lot more often, and you’ll need a cleanser that is tougher and more clarifying. During Autumn, that isn’t what your skin needs from your cleanser. Swap it out for something that is a bit gentler. Pick something with Aloe and gentle cleansing properties. Since your skin won’t be as dirty and icky at the end of the day, your cleanser just doesn’t have to be as tough and hard working. After washing your face, your skin should feel smooth and soft. If it feels tight, you need something else.

Switch your moisturizer for something cream based

There are so many different types of moisturizer on the market, it’s hard to decide which one is best for you. During the summer, your moisturizer should probably be something oil based, and in the fall, something heavier like a cream is better. Because you won’t be sweating as often, you’re less likely to clog your pores using something heavier. The air tends to be more dry during fall and winter, so you need the extra hydration that you would get from a cream based moisturizer. However, make sure you are always listening to your skin! If the switch causes breakouts that don’t resolve within a short period of time of using the new moisturizer, and if you have naturally oily skin, stick to a lighter moisturizer!

Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate

You know that dry air we keep talking out? It’s going to dry out your skin. And when your skin dries out, it dies. That’s a normal part of the life cycle of your skin, but you don’t want a layer of dead skin on your face. It will prevent your makeup from applying correctly, your skincare products won’t be as effective, and it will potentially clog up your pores. Enter exfoliation. You want a gentle exfoliant to use on your face 2-3 days a week. You don’t want to exfoliate every single day, but you want to make sure that you’re giving your skin a chance to breathe and renew a few times a week. Be picky when you’re choosing your exfoliant. You don’t want anything with large, unnatural beads. They’re horrible for both the environment and your skin. They’ll tear up your skin and spread breakouts. You want something gentle.

Use a different toner

If you don’t use a toner, now is probably the best time to start using one! For the same reasons that you want to use a different cleanser during the fall season, you’ll want to use a different toner. You’ll want to pick a toner that has a bit more of a balancing effect than your summer toner. Pick something gentle and hydrating, and avoid anything that is alcohol based. Alcohol based toners are drying for the skin, which isn’t what you want during the driest months of the year.

Eat a diet with a higher fat content

Healthy fats are one of the best things you can consume for healthier and younger looking skins. You can do everything possible for your skin on the exterior, but one of the absolute best things you can do for your skin is to nurture it from the inside. Eating a diet rich in leafy green vegetables and high in healthy fats is the best way to ensure your skin looks young and bright.
